HYDERABAD: With Bonalu festival in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad starting this week, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to distribute saplings to the devotees thronging to the Mahankali temples in the city. The initiative is a part of Telangana ku Harita Haram (TKHH).

Under the present TKHH progarmme, GHMC has set a target to plant as many as 40 lakh saplings. GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy has directed the Urban Biodiversity Wing to distribute fruit bearing plants, mosquito controlling plants, Ocimum(tulasi) and other herbal plants to the devotees.

No bouquets, only tree saplings would be accepted

People coming with bouquets to present to the Mayor or GHMC Commissioner would not be entertained, instead of bouquets, citizens offering tree saplings to them would be accepted, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan said.

Even during GHMC programmes, saplings would be given to the dignitaries instead of flower bouquets, in a few previous meetings Mayor refused to accept the flower bouquets and asked them to present saplings.
GHMC invites volunteers to take part in TKHH programme: Volunteers who are interested in becoming partners with corporation towards greenery efforts, can register themselves by logging on to greenhyderabad.cgg.gov.in.

Under corporate social responsibility, GHMC has sought the support of corporates, industries and companies to provide tree guards for protection of tree saplings, Commissioner said.
