HYDERABAD: In an incident that laid bare the lack of medical facilities in Golconda Fort, a 43-year-old woman died of heart attack on Sunday while climbing the steps of the centuries-old fort for offering Bonalu prayers.

The incident happened at 11.30 am when Asif Nagar resident Anjali was climbing 365 steps of the fort to reach the temple lodged on its upper reaches. “She complained of chest pain and collapsed to the ground,” police said.

With no medical facilities inside the fort, anyone needing medical attention will have to go outside the fort to the Area Hospital located around 500 metres from the fort. If anyone gets injured or sick on the fort’s upper reaches, it would take a considerable amount to time to reach the hospital.

An ASI official on the condition of anonymity said, “Though the police and ambulance services were informed, they were delayed in reaching because of the huge surge of people in and outside the fort premises. There were so many people on Sunday inside the fort that there was no way of knowing what was happening and where.”

Police noticed her and shifted to Area Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. Sources said that Anjali faced similar discomfort last year while climbing up the fort during Bonalu. It is reported that she had been suffering from heart-related issues for a while.

Golconda police handed over her body to her family members. As it was natural death, no case was registered.
