HYDERABAD: Come November 15, big hotels, restaurants, sweet shops and banquet halls with the Greater Hyderabad limits, generating over 100 kg of waste a day, will face stringent action if they fail to install an on-site composting machine. Known as Bulk Garbage Generators (BGG), these establishments risk being sealed by the GHMC if they do not follow the rules on waste management.

Red Notices (a.k.a final warning) would be slapped on all bulk generators within GHMC limits to install the composting machines within 15 days. If they fail, water connection would be stopped and fines would be imposed. Licenses of those failing to comply even after these measures would be cancelled.

Those diligently following the rules would get a mark of appreciation -- a Green Trade Mark. These establishments would be promoted on the GHMC website. There are more than 250 bulk generators of garbage within GHMC limits. The Assistant Medical Officers of Health present in all 30 circles of the corporation had earlier issued directions regarding machine installations by November 15.

The GHMC had also issued notices, several times, to the management of hotels, restaurants, malls and shopping establishments to make use of garbage waste by converting it into compost manure. But despite that, results were not up to the mark. A meeting was held with hotel management on Saturday by GHMC Commissioner, M Dana Kishore on making Hyderabad garbage-free city.
