Actor Uday Kiran, the hat-trick hero of Tollywood, committed suicide at his residence in Srinagar Colony late Sunday night. He was 33. He had been depressed for some months due to his declining career graph, financial and domestic issues and that reportedly forced him to take the extreme step.

According to police, Uday Kiran hanged himself from the ceiling at his gymnasium in his flat around 10.30 p.m. Minutes before, he had sent an “I love you” message to his wife Vishitha. She had been to a birthday party and wasn’t home at the time. Uday Kiran also rang up his Chennai-based friend Bhoopal, who is said to be associated with the Tamil film industry and reportedly informed him of his intention to commit suicide. Vishitha and her parents were in fact at home with Uday Kiran till 8.30 p.m. He had appeared normal to them. After his wife left for the party, his in-laws wanted to stay till Monday morning but he insisted that they leave. “Vishitha called him minutes after she received his SMS. But there was no response. She then called her parents and when she learnt they had left, she asked them to return quickly,” the police said. Upon reaching home, Vishitha and her parents found the door locked from inside. Vishitha used her set of keys and went inside only to find her husband hanging from the ceiling.

They rushed him to the Apollo Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Police said the actor had been in depression for the last few months, probably due to two reasons. Firstly, he didn’t have any films on hand and secondly, he had been at loggerheads with his father after the latter remarried following his mother’s death.

West zone DCP V Satyanarayana said preliminary postmortem had revealed his death to be a case of suicide. The police, nonetheless, registered a case of suspicious death under Sec 174 of CrPC.

Uday Kiran starred in 19 movies, including three in Tamil, in a career spanning 13 years. He tasted success with his very first movie, Chitram and went on to deliver successive hits with Nuvvu Nenu and Manasantha Nuvve, earning the title ‘Hat-trick Hero.” At the peak of his career in 2003, he got engaged to megastar and Union Minister K Chiranjeevi’s daughter Sushmitha.

However, the engagement was called off due to unknown reasons. Since then, his career nosedived. In 2001, he became the youngest actor after Kamal Haasan to win the Film Fare Award for Best Actor for his role in Nuvvu Nenu. In 2006, He made his Tamil debut with the film Poi directed by K Balachander.

Uday Kiran was born on June 26, 1980 to VVK Murthy and Nirmala. His elder sister Sridevi lives in Yemen.

The actor graduated in commerce from Wesley College, Secunderabad. He married Vishitha on October 24, 2012 after the two met on Facebook. The couple had been staying in a rented flat in Srinagar Colony. She works in an IT firm.

Father Blames Tollywood

After doctors conducted postmortem at the Osmania General Hospital, the body was shifted to the NIMS mortuary. Since no one from his family, including his father, claimed the body, it lay in the hospital till evening when it was shifted to his residence in Srinagar Colony. The Movie Artistes’ Association (MAA) representatives tried to shift the body to the MAA office, so that the film fraternity could pay their last respects. However, the actor’s father reportedly objected and told MAA not to take the body. He held Tollywood responsible for his son’s death. Uday Kiran’s sister Sridevi is coming to the city from Yemen for the last rites which will be performed today. Some Brahmin organisations also blamed Tollywood for Uday Kiran’s suicide, alleging that only a few families are controlling the film industry in the State.

did he attempt suicide earlier?

Uday Kiran, who starred in 19 films, was last seen in Jai Sriram in 2013. With his career almost ending, a depressed Uday had reportedly attempted suicide a few months back. He hadn’t been in touch with his father Murthy following some financial disputes. The actor was also reportedly upset after his father remarried. His mother had died in 2006.
