Now that the Hyderabad Metro Rail project works are being executed in core areas of the twin cities with heavy traffic congestion, chief secretary PK Mohanty has instructed the officials to conduct joint inspections so that the inconvenience for road-users is minimised and traffic moves smoothly.

Mohanty held a special task force meeting on Thursday and reviewed the progress of the Metro project. He advised HMR, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), roads and buildings (R&B) department, additional commissioners of police (Traffic), Hyderabad and Cyberabad and L&TMRHL to conduct joint inspections so that the inconvenience for road-users is minimised and traffic moves smoothly.

Making a detailed presentation, HMR managing director NVS Reddy explained that the project is going at a brisk pace and so far 1,150 foundations (35 km), 1,001 pillars (30 km) and 8,205 segments (sufficient for 25 km) have been completed.

The track laying work in the first stretch of 8 km between Nagole to Mettuguda is going on briskly and that trial runs of trains will start in this stretch in July  and this stretch will be opened for passenger traffic on Ugadi next year as scheduled.

Highlighting the unique financial model of the HMR project, Mohanty informed the senior officers of Central and state government departments that this project is a path-breaking project for the whole country and that all departments and organisations will have to extend wholehearted support for the successful implementation of this project.

He reviewed the shifting of utilities like water lines, sewer lines, electrical cables etc., and has set targets for the GHMC, R&B, National Highways, Water Board, APCPDCL and APTransco for facilitating smooth execution of the project.

Emphasising the need for a coordinated effort, he instructed NVS Reddy, GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar, APCPDCL managing director SAM Rizvi and HMWSSB managing director J Syamala Rao to conduct fortnightly review meetings to create enough work fronts for the concessionaire L&TMRHL to further speed up the project. Nodal officers have also been appointed from all government organisations to resolve the issues at the field level.

Principal secretary, medical and health, LV Subrahmanyam, principal secretary (MAUD) SKJoshi, finance secretary L Premchandra Reddy, HMDA metropolitan commissioner Neerabh Kumar Prasad, APSRTC managing director J Purnachandra Rao, Hyderabad district collector MK Meena, L&TMRHL mananging director VB Gadgil and other senior officials participated in the meeting.
