D Vijayalakshmi, wife of D Seshagiri Rao, head of the cardiology department, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), who went missing a few days ago was found dead at the couple’s penthouse in Jubilee Hills on Wednesday.

According to police, Vijayalakshmi had committed suicide by consuming sleeping pills. She had been depressed ever since her father expired one year ago. The police found a bottle of sleeping pills in the penthouse where her body was found lying on the floor.

Vijayalakshmi was a native of Nuzvid, Krishna district. DCP (West Zone) V Satyanarayana said the Jubilee Hills police had received a missing complaint from Seshagiri Rao a few days ago. “During investigation, we came to know that she went into depression following her father’s death. She used to consume sleeping pills every day and had recently purchased the pills from a medical store in Srinagar Colony. She went to the penthouse and committed suicide by consuming more than 30 pills,” he said. The police visited the penthouse Wednesday and found her decomposed body.

The body will be handed over to her family after post-mortem on Thursday.

Seshagiri Rao was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of `1.6 lakh from a stent supplier on Jan 25 this year.

The anti-corruption bureau sleuths had recovered the tainted amount from his office and arrested him. A case was registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Later, Rao was suspended. However, he was recently reinstated as head of the cardiology department.
