The Motor Vehicles Department on Saturday conducted extensive checking of transport buses, including Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses, in the district following directions issued in this regard by Transport Commissioner Rishiraj Singh. Checkings were carried out in Kochi, Tripunithura, Paravoor, Aluva, Perumbavoor, Mattanchery, Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam.

According to officials of the Motor Vehicles Department, they checked 126 buses in the district. The speed governor system was defunct in 65 buses, including a KSRTC bus. Fitness certificates of six buses were cancelled as they were not in a state to be operated and posed risk to the public. “Motor Vehicles Department officials under the supervision of Road Transport Commissioner were engaged in checking following direction from Transport Commissioner Rishiraj Singh.

The 65 buses in which speed governors were defunct have been issued notices and cases under the Motor Vehicle Act have been registered. The bus owners have been asked to bring the buses to the Motor Vehicles Department office the next day. The checking would continue in the coming days also,” the officials said. In Kochi, checkings were conducted at Vytilla mobility hub, Kakkanad, South, High Court, Marine Drive, boat jetty and Kalamassery. “Several private buses, both long distance and city permit, had disconnected speed governors. In some buses, the speed governing machine was tuned to reduce the speed only after 80-90 km/h. The department has decided to take strict action against rash driving,” they said.
