Biennale to add colour to Cochin carnival

Cochin Carnival, this year, will be all the more special with a colourful combination of contemporary art as part of Kochi-Muziris Biennale.

Marking the beginning of the 29th edition of the carnival, Solidarity Day will be observed on December 9 at St Francis Church in Fort Kochi. The carnival will conclude on January 1. This year the carnival features unique games, dirt bike races, beach volleyball and fireworks display that will go hand in hand with installation art, paintings and digital media, besides ethnic performance arts as part of India’s first Biennale which starts on December 12.

Pop icon M.I.A. will give a concert at the inauguration of the event.

Cochin Carnival is celebrated jointly by over 100 clubs and cultural organisations in Fort Kochi in association with Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council, Corporation and  Kochi-Muziris Biennale.

Dominic Presentation MLA will hoist the flag at the Vasco da Gama Square in Fort Kochi on December 16. Carnival fair and Amusement park will be live from December 20 to January 2 at Veli Ground. Western musical night and DJ will be held on December 23 at parade ground. Western musical contest will be held from December 28 to 30 at Pallath Raman Ground.

Another attraction will be Triple Thayambaka by Mattannoor Sankarankutty at Fort Kochi beach on December 31. Union Minister K V Thomas will inaugurate the Carnival procession on January 1, which will begin from Veli ground.
