Kitchen Gardens will Boost Agri Sector, Says M S Swaminathan

Father of Green Revolution M S Swaminathan on Sunday said that to get the complete benefit of the food security law, agricultural production in the country should be increased. He was inaugurating a national seminar on the topic ‘Food Security: Significance and Challenges’ organised by Kochi Open Forum here.

He added that a project announced by United Nations -- family farming -- should be implemented in the country next year.

“More kitchen gardens will give momentum to the agriculture sector. Priority should be given to attract youngsters to the farm sector. The possibility of minimum support price should be utilised for this,” he said.

Though he lauded organic farming, he said it is not good that only organic farming is being promoted.

“It is a misconception that fertilisers are dangerous. We have to give required minerals in the sand. Large-scale use of pesticides and fertilisers has had an adverse effect on human beings and this should be banned,” he said.

On the occasion, Prof K Aravindakshan said if the public distribution system in the country is disrupted, it would result in far-reaching consequences.

MG University Pro Vice-Chancellor Sheena Shukkur also spoke.
