An Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic began functioning in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences Kochi.

The Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Departments at AIMS have been providing treatment for patients with congenital heart diseases and have pioneered the field in India.

Congenital heart diseases are mostly diagnosed in infancy or early childhood. Treatment should be ideally accomplished in childhood. This is typically through surgery or catheter-based techniques.These teenagers and adults with treated and untreated congenital heart diseases often have many unique problems like physical limitations in performing normal daily life activities.

This group of patients is called GUCH (Grown-up Congenital Heart). Care of these patients often requires special, focused approach. 

The specialised Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) clinic, which was established by the department of Pediatric Cardiology at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, has been launched in the wake of such developments. The weekly clinic operating on Wednesdays from 9 am to 5 pm has of a specialised team of experts comprising of pediatric cardiologists, adult cardiologists, cardiac MRI specialists, psychologists, gynaecologists, occupational and respiratory therapists, endocrinologists and social workers.

The clinic will provide special attention to the needs of these patients and streamline the process of their check-ups and treatment during their visit to the hospital. It is the first-of-its-kind service in the country, said a press release.
