Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed on Saturday said that Muhammed Abdur Rahiman was a freedom fighter who upheld the true secular values of the Indian National Congress.
Accepting an award instituted in Abdur Rahiman’s name at a function held here, he said that Rahiman questioned the prevalent social evils of his time and his ideals had drew Aryadan to the Congress party.
“When he was called a ‘kafir’ (infidel) at an election campaign in 1937, he dared to answer back his detractors. He was often lathicharged and attacked by the police. He died a patriot after addressing a public rally at Kodiyathur,” he said.
The minister rued that a memorial has not been constructed for Rahiman, who was an important part of the Khilafat Movement in Malabar region. PSC Chairman K S Radhakrishnan remembered Rahiman for being a true socialist. He said Aryadan Mohammed deserved the award, which was instituted in the name of the freedom fighter, as the minister is a true secularist who is also not afraid to speak his mind. Swami Vishwa Bhadranandha Shakthi Bodhi remembered Rahiman as a true journalist who had started Malayalam publication ‘Al Ameen’.
Hibi Eden MLA, advocate P K Abdul Rahman, K A Ali Akbar and advocate Babu Karukapadathu were also present at the function.
