Action Plan to Control Stray Dog Menace

Taking into consideration the increasing menace of stray dogs in the city and other areas, various stakeholders have decided to join hands to prepare an action plan to curb the growing menace.
The district administration, local self bodies and the Animal Husbandry Department will be roped in to prepare the plan while taking into account the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Suggestions such as sterilisation, protection of dogs in enclosed areas so that they won’t cause a threat to people were discussed at the District Development Committee (DDC) meeting held in Kochi on Saturday.
District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth said Union Minister K V Thomas will hold a meeting to finalise the action plan on Tuesday.The local bodies have been told to help the Health Department to purchase rabies vaccines. Recommendations will be made to the government to include rabies vaccination under the health scheme under which free treatment is provided to those under 18 years of age.
The District Collector said residents’ associations as well as local bodies will have to join hands together to curb the growing mosquito menace in the city. Residents’ associations have expressed interest in participating in the drive if they receive the money for the same.
