Kochi Leads in Cyber Crimes

Even though cases registered for cyber crimes decreased in 2013 as against 2012 in the city, it still tops the list in cyber crime cases in the state. In 2013, there were 37 cases registered under IT ACT and under various Sections of IPC in the city.
Police officials said that cases under IT Act are registered for email abuse, email threatening, hacking, mobile phone loss, theft, online cheating, scams, abuse through social networking sites, phone abuse, phone information, CDR analysis and website-related cases.
Twenty nine cyber crime cases were registered in Kochi City in 2011 and 45 in 2012 but it decreased to 37 in 2013. At the state-level, 227 cases were registered under IT Act during 2011 and 269 in 2012.
The police received 3,300 complaints under cyber crimes in Koch in 2013. It was higher in the previous years - 3,573 in 2012 and 9,769 in 2011.
However, the police officials said that less than 10 per cent of the complaints received is registered as cases. “In most instances, after the investigation, the complainant withdraws them as someone familiar to them would be involved. In most cases, it would be youth or schoolchildren and the complaints are dropped, a reason why 37 cases were registered among the 3,000 complaints,” officials with the Hightech Cell in Thiruvananthapuram said.
Police officials said that since Facebook has become popular, the misuse of the site has also increased. zc.
City Police Commissioner K G James said that awareness should be created among students and youth on the proper use of social networking sites.
