KOCHI: Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre has performed the first complex robotic surgery for pancreatic cancer.
The surgery called Whipple Operation, was done on a 62-year old cancer patient. Minimally invasive Whipple Operation is performed in a very few centres in the world as this is a very technically complex surgery. “Though the course of cancer cannot be altered, the robotic procedure brings down the surgical trauma on the patient radically,” said Dr O V Sudheer, Chief
of Minimal Access Surgery at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. “Unlike the time taken in conventional surgeries, here the patient is able to go back and resume his routine life in a couple of weeks.”The patient however, has to return to the hospital for follow up tests and medical advices, said Dr Sudheer.
AIMS is the only hospital in India with a Centre for Excellence in Robotics, with the latest robotic machines to carry out complex surgical procedures .
