Illegal Parking: Abraham Madamakkal Road Turning Deathtrap

KOCHI:The Abraham Madamakkal road in front of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) is gradually turning into a deathtrap owing to the illegal parking on the stretch.

Vehicles such as container lorry, bus, car and two-wheelers are mainly occupying the stretch and posing a threat to the lives of commuters. Even during odd hours, illegal parking is rampant here.

As this road connects the city to Vallarpadam, Vypeen, Paravur, Kodungallur and other areas, the flow of vehicles is high. However, the illegal parking and the temporary shops on both sides of the road have turned commuting on the stretch a Herculean task.

“Several accidents have taken place on the stretch owing to the illegal parking of vehicles. As heavy vehicles are parked on the stretch, the view of the drivers of other vehicles gets blocked, which has led to several accidents. The vehicles coming to High Court and other government and private offices in the area also use road this as a parking space,” said a street vendor on the stretch.

Adding to the problem are the visitors coming to enjoy the  beauty of backwaters who also park their vehicles on the stretch.

Though the act of illegal parking has been going on along the stretch for long, the police or the Motor Vehicles Department are yet to clamp down on it. “They will conduct the drive only to earn money for the state exchequer, but they haven’t done anything against the illegal parking so far,” said the vendor.
