KOCHI: The district administration has decided to speed-up the proceedings for implementing the total sanitation programme in the district.
Mohammed Y Safeerulla, the newly appointed District Collector, on Thursday issued instructions to the departments concerned in this regard. As many as 19 of the 82 panchayats in the district have been declared ‘total-sanitation’ local bodies - that is, every household in the panchayats have toilet facility. Meanwhile, the authorities received 10,358 new applications for setting up toilets.
The deadline for completing the project in municipalities and the Corporation is March 31, 2017. The deadline for gram panchyats is October 31. The local bodies should also ensure that all the anaganvadis and schools within their jurisdiction have toilet facility.
The local bodies will be given `2 lakh each for constructing public toilets. The Collector also asked representatives of the Kuttampuzha, Chellanam and Palluruthy panchayats to speed- up the proceedings as the local bodies have been lagging behind others in implementation of the project. Meanwhile, CREDAI representatives who attended the meeting said the agency was ready to construct more public toilets in the Corporation, if fund is made available.
