Waves of expression through art

‘Waves in Silence’, an art exhibition/sale at Suryakanthi Art Gallery showcases the work of 15 artists, and is on till September 20

KOCHI: “People have always talked of painting as a Lalithakala or simple art. But now it’s not as simple and involves much more creativity and a number of techniques,” says artist B D Dethan as he walks across the number of paintings, including his own, at Suryakanthi Art Gallery at Sasthamangalam in the city. Glancing at the artworks by renowned artists, one would feel the same, as each of them touched across a variety of techniques and genres.

The group of around 20 paintings by 15 artists were displayed as part of the art show ‘Waves in Silence’ which is being held at the gallery. The art expo cum sale showcases paintings by artists Achuthan Kudallur, S Ajayakumar, C Bhagyanathan, B D Dethan, T Kaladharan, Koya N K P Muthu, former chief secretary Lizzie Jacob, Manoj Vyloor, P V Nandan, Nemom Pushparaj, G Rajendran, K K Sasi, Sathyapal, Sreelal and Riyas Komu.

From simple semi-realistic paintings by G Rajendran to abstract paintings by artists Achuthan Kudallur and Lizzie Jacob, the artworks are sure to be a feast for the eyes to any art lover. Each of the paintings has something different to offer.

While the intricate watercolour painting by C Bhagyanathan is a piece of beauty, T Kaladharan’s ‘Vasanta Sandhyagal’ catches one’s eyes for its tasteful use of colours on canvas, setting up a sublime tone. Says Dethan about his series of paintings,  pointing at one painting which shows a decapitated statue lying abandoned at the sea side while a lone leaf flutters overhead, “My paintings speak about the present situation surrounding us. It symbolises how we have let go of our old culture and way of life.” Another highlight is a work by Riyas Komu, an artist noted for his distinctive style. Koya N K P Moythu’s surrealistic ‘Ode to Infinity’ and S Ajayakumar’s painting which uses techniques inspired by old stone carvings are few of the other delightful works.

The art exhibition will be on till September 20 and will be open to the public from 11 am to 6 pm.
