KOCHI: The Haritha Keralam project received a starry boost in the district, with actors Mammootty and Sreenivasan extending support for the project at its district-level launch here on Thursday. Education Minister C Raveendranath inaugurated the project with the two actors.

The first task under the initiative was organic farming on 50 cents of land at Kakkanad. The project aims at boosting agricultural production, conservation of water resources and sustainable waste disposal.

“Taking measures to curb pollution should be imbibed in our culture. Efforts should be made to regain and maintain environmental balance,” said Raveendranath. So far, around 1,277 tasks have been chalked out for 1,338 wards of 82 panchayats in the district. Also, Kochi Corporation has drafted 70 projects.

“Civics,’ a subject that was taught in the past, is not taught anymore. It is up to the government to take steps in this regard,” said Mammootty. Speaking on the occasion, Sreenivasan said people are shying away from agriculture mainly due to huge financial losses.

MLAs P T Thomas and Hibi Eden; Mayor Soumini Jain; district panchayat president Asha Sanil; Thrikkakara municipality chairperson Neenu K K; District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla; former MP P Rajeev and Assistant Collector Renu Raj also attended the function.
