5,844 wells ready to store rainwater as part of Haritha Keralam project

According to District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla, 622 projects had been mooted aimed at water conservation alone.

KOCHI: Giving a major fillip to the State Government’s Haritha Keralam project which aims at the expansion of agricultural land, water conservation and cleanliness, the district is ready to store rainwater in 5,844 wells. District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla, in a statement here on Tuesday, said that 622 projects have been mooted aimed at water conservation alone.

“As a part of the Haritha Keralam project, 284 ponds have been cleaned so far and are ready to store water. In addition, a 23.65 km-long bund has also been constructed and canals also cleared in 99.6 km in several parts of the district,” he said. As per the official data, the district administration has received 1,338 projects from the grama panchayats for implementation under the Haritha Keralam project.

“Of which, 353 projects are for kick-starting cultivation in barren land. 550 projects are mainly for waste management. In addition, there are 419 and 33 projects in municipalities and Corporation respectively,” the Collector added. It was on December 8 that the district-level inauguration of Haritha Keralam was done by Education Minister C Raveendranath. The project took off with vegetable cultivation on 50 cents close to the district panchayat building.
