Shamna’s father alleges ‘conspiracy’ by hospital

Shamna, a second year MBBS student of  Ernakulam Medical College, had died while undergoing treatment for fever.

KOCHI: K A Abootty, father of Shamna Tasneem who died at Ernakulam Medical College a few months ago allegedly due to medical negligence, came down heavily against the authorities of Rajagiri Hospital for joining the alleged conspiracy to cover up the incident.

Speaking at a press conference here, Abootty alleged that Shamna was shifted from the Medical College to Rajagiri Hospital after her death. He said the hospital authorities administered medicine on Shamna’s body and included the charges in the bill issued to the family.

Shamna, a second year MBBS student of  Ernakulam Medical College, had died while undergoing treatment for fever.

“It is clear from hospital documents that Shamna had died at Ernakulam Medical College. Records of Rajagiri show that when Shamna was brought there at 6.30 pm, she had neither central pulse, nor cardiac activity. Also, the inquiry report submitted by Medical Education Joint Director Dr D Sreekumari stated Shamna’s dilated pupils indicated that brain death had already occurred, and that no cardiac activity was recorded in the ECG taken at 3.45 pm,” said Abootty.

“Doctors at the Medical College tried to escape from their responsibility, and Rajagiri Hospital authorities charged us `8,986 for treating Shamna, who was already dead,” he added.
According to Abootty, Rajagiri Hospital superintendent Dr Sunny Orathel told him that the latter had visited the Medical College one hour before Shamna was shifted to Rajagiri.
