61 pvt buses booked for traffic breach

The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) on Monday launched a crackdown against traffic violation, in view of the recent spurt in road accidents in the city.

KOCHI: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) on Monday launched a crackdown against traffic violation, in view of the recent spurt in road accidents in the city. During the drive initiated based on a directive by the Transport Commissioner, several private buses were found to be flouting traffic rules. MVD officials booked 61 private buses for various violations, of which 19 were found to plying without speed governor.

“Most of the buses booked during the inspection were found to be plying with faulty speed governors,” said an official. In addition, 531 two-wheeler riders were booked for not using helmet, and 59 motorists were booked for driving without licence. Meanwhile, cases were registered against motorists who were found to be using mobile phone while driving. The MVD squad also intercepted 163 vehicles plying without rearview mirror. Around `2.58 lakh was collected as fine on Monday alone. Ernakulam RTO Saddik Ali said the inspection would continue in the coming days.
