KOCHI: Kochi has witnessed the art of kalamkari in various forms, but probably one of the best exhibition in recent times was organised by Sangeetha Rajesh, a Hyderabad-based educationalist. She is also the owner of Sangeetha’s Kalamkari Festival at Hyderabad.

Even though Sangeetha was always interested in different forms of artwork, it was after much research that she got to know more about the kalamakari works.

“Five years ago, kalamkari wasn’t even present on the fashion scene. It was largely unexplored with only select people preferring the artwork on fabric. Most people thought kalamkari was something that is hung on the walls,” said Sangeetha.

At the initial stages, her family too disapproved her venturing into kalamkari as they felt the ‘dull piece of clothing’ wouldn’t fetch a profit.

However, Sangeetha went ahead and started meeting people who knew more about it. Later, she, along with their help, researched and experimented using different types of looms. And today, her store in Hyderabad is a much sought-after one for quality kalamkaris.

There are sarees, salwar kameezes, kurtis, dupattas, anarkalis, skirts, blouses, shawls, unstitched material of the finest quality among the kalamakari works.

The price ranges from Rs 1300-Rs 20,000. “Kalamkari is an expression of love towards art, a form of creativity. It is a celebration of emotions that we experience in our daily life. Each art work is a unique piece that attracts the viewer,” said Sangeetha.
