KOCHI: It was an opportunity for the young minds to indulge in art and letters as they went on a ‘guided tour’ relishing both. There were rows of books in various genres along with a volley of murals, most of them  made by their friends. The art and book exhibition held at Navodaya Vidyalaya, Vithura, offered the students a platform to explore the literary and artistic worlds and hone their skills. “The idea was to familiarise students with art and books. We organised the fest in a more extensive manner so that even students from other schools could also participate,” says Viswanathan, teacher.

Since the students attend art and craft classes as part of their curriculum, the school authorities decided to introduce the unique technique of mural art. “We selected some talented students and held a mural workshop for them. We brought in an expert to take classes and later organised this art exhibition where their works were displayed.” He adds that the participants were quite happy as they felt the workshop was highly inspiring. “And they were more than excited to display their works in front of their friends, parents and teachers,” he said.

He said that they organised the book fest to introduce new books to the students and promote reading. “Many of our students are serious readers. Along with stories and fantasies they read all types of books including nonfiction,” he says. From great literary works and comics to books that help in academics were part of the fest. “We coordinated with the publishers and selected books that are most beneficial to young minds,” he says. English, Malayalam and a handful of Hindi books were offered as part of the expo. “Today most of the students are into English books. So we brought in some good reads in Malayalam to steer them towards their mother-tongue as well. We are also coming up with some other programmes like  aksharaslokam so that they stay in touch with Malayalam,” he said.
