 At a time when festive revelry at government offices during work days are likely to cause a headache to the public, the Kanayanoor taluk office has set an example by organising Onam on a holiday.

KOCHI: At a time when festive revelry at government offices during work days are likely to cause a headache to the public, the Kanayanoor taluk office has set an example by organising Onam celebration on a holiday.

Though government offices were closed on Monday, the staff council organised Onam celebrations on the office premises.“The celebration was conducted on Ayamkali Jayanthi to avoid any inconvenience to the public,” said a press release issued by the District Information Office.

A staff working at the taluk office said usually hundreds of person visit the government offices across the state daily. “Celebrating Onam on a working day will affect the functioning of the office. Besides, there will be many closed holidays next week. The rush will be high as salary for pensioners will be disbursed from treasuries this weekend.

Similarly, a large number of students approach government offices to get their certificates attested to apply for higher educations in colleges and universities. They should not be affected,” he said.

The retired members of the taluk office were also invited for the celebration which was inaugurated by District Collector Mohammed Y Safirulla. ‘Pookalam’ (flower carpet) competition and Onam feast were held as part of the celebration. Assistant Collector Isha Priya, tahsildars Vrindhadevi N R and Babu P K and deputy tahsildar P D Venugopal also took part in the event.
