Elderly couple robbed by armed assailants

Armed assailants attacked and injured an elderly couple at their own house after taking away their gold ornaments in the city early on Friday.

KOCHI: Armed assailants attacked and injured an elderly couple at their own house after taking away their gold ornaments in the city early on Friday. The attackers broke into the house of E K Ismail at Pullepady around 3 am by bending the grill bars. Ismail and his wife were getting ready to go to mosque when the assailants manhandled them. They even slit the woman’s wrist.The couple’s driver who lives upstairs tried to save them but retreated after seeing the number of assailants, said police.
Ismail’s daughter-in-law was sleeping on thee second floor of the house with her infant child. Upon hearing noises, she ran downstairs where the robbers threatened her.

While searching the house later, the police and forensics team found a sharp-edged weapon and a live bullet leading to the suspicion the robbers were carrying a gun. CCTV footage from the nearby area shows a group of people leaving the house by 4 am. However, their faces were not clear.

A team of officers, including Range IG P Vijayan and City police commissioner M P Dinesh, visited the spot in the morning. A team under the supervision of the commissioner is on the lookout of the attackers.
Separate teams have been formed to nab the accused, said the police.

“Our first priority is to catch the accused. We believe it to be a robbery, but the teams are looking at the incident from various angles. The accused will soon be nabbed,” said A R Prem Kumar, DCP.
