KOCHI: We may have heard several stories of successful entrepreneurship, but very few inspire us to start a business for a novel purpose.

Biju Varghese’s Spince Engineering is one business innovation which aims more at empowering an otherly abled person than the potential revenue it can generate.

Biju, 44, of Mukkuttuthara, Kottayam suffered a spinal injury in a road accident when he was 25. But the gritty innovator decided then he was not going to let the injury leave him bedridden.

Biju has developed an innovative system which enables people in wheelchair to drive a car using a hand-operated brake, clutch and accelerator. The system can by fitted on any car within 15 minutes. The Automotive Research Association of India has approved the system.

“I feel proud to have given a lease of life to over 2,000 otherly abled people and their families,” he said.

While the unit can cost between Rs 15,000 and Rs 30,000, depending on a person’s disability, Biju fits it free of cost to customers who genuinely cannot afford it. He successfully tested the system on several occasions and even hit a speed of 170 kmph speed on the Pune highway.

Biju is attending a business meet here and showcasing the product hoping an automotive company would take up his system and it would get wide recognition.
