Tiny tots get a new life after heart surgery

KOCHI: Doctors at Lisie Hospital here successfully performed cardiac surgery on two infants, giving them a lease of life.

A function was organised at the hospital on Saturday to send home six-month-old Akhil, who hails from a Kasargod family, and three-month-old Sivanandh from Wayanad.

Akhil, who suffered from a complex congenital heart disease, was brought to Dr Thomas Mathew at Lisie nearly 10 days ago.

The surgery was performed on the same day. The main valves of the child’s heart, which had two holes, were conjoined. The condition — common atrioventricular valve —  causes severe pulmonary arterial hypertension and recurrent respiratory tract infection.

Sivanandh was transported from Thiruvananthapuram in a critical care ambulance. The child was admitted to the hospital with severe respiratory tract infection caused by multiple holes in the heart.
The function was attended by hospital director Fr Thomas Vaikathuparambil, Dr Jose Chacko Periappuram, Dr Rony Mathew Kadavil and Dr Jacob Abraham.

Since the children hail from financially backward families, they were treated free of cost at Lisie, with support from the Dr Varghese Moolan Foundation and MIJSOC-Dubai.
