Rural Police set to launch anti-goonda squad

Autorickshaw operators have been directed to display details of the driver on the vehicle, in an effort to curb crimes involving auto drivers.

KOCHI: The Ernakulam Rural Police have decided to set up an anti-goonda squad, comprising personnel from the AR Camp, taking a cue from the City Task Force (CTF) constituted recently by the Kochi City Police.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Ernakulam Rural SP A V George said a programme to impart training to members of the exclusive squad would commence next month.

“Details of gangsters and history-sheeters will be collected with assistance of the Special Branch. The police will also check whether they are currently active in goonda activities, or not,” said George, who assumed charge as the District Police Chief last week, adding that stringent action would be initiated against those involved in illegal mining in the district. “We have chalked out a special programme to curb the menace of drug abuse in educational institutions.

We have directed school authorities to ensure participation of the principal SIs of the corresponding police stations in PTA meetings. In addition, the Anti-drug Clubs in schools will be revitalised,” he said, and pointed out that the police would initiate additional measures to curb road accidents. “Legal action will be initiated against those booked for drunken driving, and the vehicles involved will be seized. Also, the police will recommend suspension of the offenders’ driving licence,” said the SP.

Autorickshaw operators have been directed to display details of the driver on the vehicle, in an effort to curb crimes involving auto drivers.

“At the Aluva police station, special facilities including sniffer dogs will be arranged to check drug peddling by migrant workers. The police will also conduct special adalats, and install complaint boxes at railway stations, bus stands, schools and colleges by February,” he added.
