KOCHI: The Anti-ragging Act should be amended to ensure that convicts get harsher punishment like seven years’ rigorous imprisonment, said Youth Front (YF - Jacob) state president Premson Manjamattom.
The Youth Front raised the demand in a memorandum submitted to Governor P Sathasivam the other day, after conducting a mass signature campaign across the state against ragging.

“The Anti-ragging Act should be amended and ragging should be made a non-bailable offence. Though the Act was enforced in the state in 1998, the incidence of ragging has been increasing with every passing year.

As per the existing law, ragging is a bailable offence, which attracts punishment of maximum two years’ imprisonment. So, the law should be made more stringent,” stated the memorandum.
