Maharaja College students' and teachers' unions end hunger strike

A meeting of teachers’ and students’ organisations at Maharaja’s College reached a consensus on ending the hunger strike being staged by a section of students.

KOCHI: A meeting of teachers’ and students’ organisations at Maharaja’s College here on Tuesday reached a consensus on ending the hunger strike being staged by a section of students.

An official announcement on the matter will be made after the governing council meeting to be held at the college on Wednesday. The strike was called in protest against the delay in opening the boys’ hostel, which has been closed for renovation.

The meeting, convened as per a directive by District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla, was attended by the vice-principal, hostel warden, college union representatives and teachers.

“We will end the strike only after the governing council meeting. The authorities have agreed to accommodate some students at the teachers’ hostel,” said a students’ union representative.

“Renovation of the hostel is delayed due to the lethargic attitude of the principal. The principal has not yet signed the estimate submitted,” he alleged.

The SFI is planning to strengthen its agitation demanding the resignation of the principal.
