KOCHI: The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Wednesday asked the state government to name the extremist forces which, as per its claim, were supporting the Puthuvype residents’ agitation against the IOC LPG plant.

Announcing the party’s support to the agitation, SDPI state president P Abdul Majeed Faisy said the government could not suppress a mass agitation by running a campaign alleging extremist forces were behind it.

“The government has not revealed any information regarding the extremist groups that are behind the agitation. It is a trick to divert people’s attention. The LDF Government should realise they came to power owing to people’s support. Suppressing their agitation using police force will not bear fruit,” he told reporters in Kochi.

He said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan should shift to Puthuvype to understand the protesters’ sentiments. “The people took to the streets when their lives were endangered. The plant should be shifted to some other place far from residential areas,” he said. SDPI would organise protest campaigns against the IOC plant across Kerala.
