The long-pending bloody talk

KOCHI: Period-shaming has become one of the many forms of discrimination that millions of girls have experienced, irrespective of class or community. But now woman’s place in the society has undergone a sea change and the world is a different place. Women in today’s world are single and independent, mothers and leaders, cis-gendered and queer, fearless and nurturing.

On the occasion of Women’s Day, Sustainable Menstruation Kerala collective along with Thanal and The Red Cycle initiative in Kozhikode, has brought together menstrual rights activists, experts and
alternative hygiene products groups together to push for a sustainable menstruation agenda across the state. They will be organising ‘Celebrate Menstruation’ , a day-long  festivity at Manaveeyam Veedhi on March 8.

There will be stalls set up by alternate product manufacturers and sellers open from 10 am. Art exhibitions, talks, panel discussions and film screening will be part of the programme. There will be ‘Let’s talk menstruation’ stalls for public interaction and activities for school girls and women.

Mayor V K Prashant will speak at a special session, where he will interact with school and college students. Rakhi Ravikumar, Deputy Mayor, will inaugurate the evening session that will be followed by the Screening of ‘Womenses’, by Unnikrishnan Avala.

From 7 pm to 8 pm there will be a panel discussion in which menstrual hygiene experts, educators and government representatives will participate.
