Kochi hospitals face probe for denying treatment to burn victim

KOCHI: The district administration has decided to ask the director of Health Department to conduct an inquiry into the lapse on the part of the three hospitals that allegedly denied treatment to a pregnant women who had suffered severe burn injuries.

District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla has sought an investigation against ESI Hospital, Ernakulam, Kottayam Medical College and Lourdes Hospital, Kochi, based on a report filed by the district medical officer after the woman hailing from Odisha succumbed to the injuries the other day.
“A letter will be sent to the director of Health Department, seeking an investigation into the incident,” said the Collector.

Thilothama, 20, wife of Ankita Nayik, was brought to ESI Hospital here from Kottayam Medical College, due to lack of isolation ward at Kottayam MC.

The ESI Hospital authorities refused to admit the patient, saying they were not authorised to accept the case. Though the woman was shifted to Lourdes Hospital later, she was denied treatment there.

“The authorities of ESI Hospital have failed to provide proper facilities to patients, despite having sufficient fund.Hundreds of workers are depending on the hospital,” said an employee of the Kitex Group, where the victim’s husband works.
