KOCHI: The Goshree Human Rights Protection Council on Monday staged a protest in front of the Goshree Islands Development Agency (GIDA) demanding immediate steps to repair the potholed Goshree bridge road.

According to the Council members, the apathy shown by the GIDA was to blame for the plight.
Council chairman Paul J Mambilly, who inaugurated the protest, said the GIDA had done practically nothing to resurface the stretch. “The bridge connecting Vypeen is full of potholes and has become unmotorable. For nearly two years now, it has become a nightmare for the motorists, leading to numerous accidents,” Mambilly said. Further compounding the problem is the lack of streetlights on the bridge.
“In the last several months, the GIDA had promised to address the issue several times. But it remains on paper.Even though the three Goshree bridges were opened to traffic way back in 2004, until now the GIDA was unable to  provide the streetlights. Likewise, the Agency has adopted a lackadaisical approach to the demand for resurfacing the road,” he said.
Besides, the Council members laid a wreath in front of the GIDA office. Meanwhile, GIDA sources said the road would be repaired in a month’s time. “We have already invited bids for carrying out the works. The entire work would be completed in a month’s time,” they said.
