KOCHI:The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) on Wednesday  issued ‘stop memos’ to 52 stage carriages in the district after detecting large-scale tampering of speed governors.

The action came in the wake of a statewide drive against private and transport buses plying without speed governors. According to MVD officers most of the stage carriages ply in the city after removing the speed governors. “Even KSRTC buses had removed the connection from the speed governor. Many vehicles are yet to install it. The buses will be allowed to ply only after installing the speed governor,” said motor vehicles inspector Shafiq, who took part in the drive.
In Ernakulam district, 165 private buses were inspected out of which ‘irregularities’ were detected in 52. Inspections were carried out at Kaloor bus stand, High Court Junction and Vyttila mobility hub. The squad found seven buses flouting the norms in North Paravur, four in Thripunithura, two in Aluva, two in Mattanchery and one in Angamaly.
“Though we issued check reports the compounding fee will be decided later. For tampering, `2,000 will be charged while for removal of the speed governor the amount will be `5,000. If the violation continues the permit of the vehicles will be suspended,” said RTO P H Sadhik Ali.
