Reclaiming a river

 The district administration has launched a drive to clean up the Kadambrayar river, one of the main water resources of the district.

KOCHI: The district administration has launched a drive to clean up the Kadambrayar river, one of the main water resources of the district. The work began near Brahmapuram bridge. “Around 9 km stretch of the river will be cleaned using private funds.

It is expected the work to remove weeds from the river will be completed in one month,” said District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla. The cleaning of Edachira canal will also be taken up as part of this project.


The cleaning works will be carried out under the Haritha Keralam project. The fund for this will be raised from Corporate Social Responsibility Fund of the major institutions. Machines are being used to clean the channel of weeds.

The work is being led by the Minor Irrigation Department. To maintain the natural flow of the river, clean the water, increase fisheries resources, contain water borne diseases, to turn the river back into its natural course, make it navigable and promote water transport are the major aims of the initiative.


V P Sajeendran, MLA was also present at the launch of the drive.
Earlier, the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC)had decided to give a facelift to Kadambrayar tourism by introducing a range of boat services across the islands, including coracles, rafts and houseboat to promote Eco-tourism Village Project.DTPC had started the initiative to popularise the destination way back in 2009.
