Aswin P S is juggling between being a photographer and a music director
Exploring new frontiers

KOCHI: Kollam-based Aswin P S is an avid photographer. Along with his passion for capturing frames, he has recently directed and produced a five-minute-long music album, even trying his hands at being a lyricist.Titled ‘Meenakshi’, the music-album revolves around a short flashback sequence between two lovers planning to elope. With his passion not just restricted to photography, the venture is also a stepping stone towards one of his ambitions. “Filmmaking is one of my passions. The album has received several views and has been shared by many, including director Jeethu Joseph in his FB page. I feel happy that my work has been appreciated,” he said.

For Aswin, photography was not something he planned to pursue as a career. Though he studied Carnatic music for a few years, he was never drawn towards music. It was after he began his business after completing his MBA from Bangalore, he realised there was something missing. “I am a very emotional person and regard myself as a very good relationship builder. However, one of the first things that MBA teaches you is about the ethics you need to follow in business. At the end of the day, it is just an enterprise and interpersonal relationships can go for a toss. Gradually I realised that business was not for me.”
During his path towards self-discovery, he fell in love with photography.

As a nature lover, learning photography from its basics was never a challenge for the self-trained amateur. “I am basically a nature lover and enjoy travelling. I bought a camera and learned the basics of photography and lighting in course of time. It was through a Facebook page I created that New Zealand-based photographer and writer Steve Brown contacted me.”

Currently specialising in macrophotography under the photographer, it was his desire to explore photography and small objects, for instance insects, in detail which attracted him to the same. In the meanwhile, Aswin also worked as a still photographer for the critically-acclaimed Malayalam feature film ‘Manhole’, after one of his photography exhibitions based on Kollam’s Ashtamudi lake caught the attention of a crew member. The photographer is now bent on achieving his next mission- being a filmmaker. “As a photographer, what you do is create frames, which is the same with films,” he says and adds that he is working on a script for a feature film.
