Keeping her memory alive

The Freethinkers is holding a one-day meeting in memory of slain journalist Gauri Lankesh

KOCHI: The Freethinkers facebook group, in association with the Kerala Freethinkers forum, is conducting a one-day protest meeting titled #IamGauri:United Against Fascism, in remembrance of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh, on Sunday, October 15, at Ernakulam Town Hall, from 9.30 am to 6.00 pm. Prominent public figures and many other distinguished personalities from different realms of society will be speaking at the event.

One of them is Akkai Padmashali, a renowned transgender activist and the founder of Ondede (‘Convergence’ in Kannada), an organisation that aims to create awareness about sexual diversity. Another speaker, Narendra Nayak is the president of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations and founder of the Dhakshina Kannada Rationalist Association.

Shirin Dalvi, who runs an Urdu news portal named ‘Urdu Express’, is also speaking at the event, along with K K Shahina who is a senior journalist at Open magazine, K J Jacob, a senior journalist at Deccan Chronicle, and Rahul Sharma, a former IPS officer, apart from the general secretary of the Indian Youth Congress, Dr Mathew Kuzhalnadan.

The afternoon session will comprise of seminars on fascism and related topics. The speakers include M G Radhakrishnan, J Reghu, Sunny M Kapikkadu and KS Madhavan.Freethinkers is a popular online community aimed at promoting rational, progressive and secular concepts. The group has organised numerous informative and educational programmes to raise public awareness on relevant social issues. These programmes cover topics such as science, politics, feminism and atheism.
