Making fine arts more recognisable

A four-day workshop, ‘Varayum Vakkum’, jointly organised by Guru Gopinath Natanagramam and Kerala Lalithakala Akademi will introduce the young artists to various styles in fine arts.

KOCHI:  However talented you are, making fine arts your primary career is not always considered as a wise decision. Though very creative and fulfilling, it’s a difficult choice, uncertain and ambivalent. But in the current scenario it also opens up an array of opportunities, provided you have the right guidance. And directing all those wannabe artists in the right way will be Varayum Vakkum, a four-day workshop jointly organised by Guru Gopinath Natanagramam and Kerala Lalithakala Akademi. Scheduled to be held in the city from November 10 to 13, the state-level workshop will introduce the participants to various styles of fine arts and their possibilities.

“Though we have many qualified and skilled artists, most of them have no clue about the marketing part of art. In the workshop they will know about the various forms of visual expression and how they can earn a living from it. The key is learning how to market your skills. The workshop basically aims to create a proper awareness among the young generation of artists,” says Raveendran Puthoor, teacher, Guru Gopinath Natanagramam.

Apart from drawing, there will be sessions on illustration, cover designing, portrait, landscape, modelling, poetry and art, fine arts market and murals. “Experts from all fields will be interacting with the participants. It will be am opportunity to hone their skills and at the same time they will be introduced to the professional aspects as well,” he says.   

Another highlight of the workshop will be its sessions on mural art. “Murals are very popular these days and it used to an exclusive temple art form in the past. But now it has a very strong market. All such marketing areas will be explored in detail in the workshop,” he says.  

Talented youngsters coming in the age group of 12 to 18 years can participate in the workshop. “They will be given all the art material, food and accommodation. Winners of state, district and revenue level competitions will be given preference. The participates will also receive a merit certificate from Lalithakala Akademi.
