Matsyafed launches first water cycle at Kerala's Njarakkal fish farm

Launching the water cycle on Saturday, Matsyafed chairman P P Chittaranjan said the fish farm - one of the popular hangout places for families - has the potential to attract more tourists.

KOCHI: The Matsyafed-owned Njarakkal fish farm has now become the first to offer water cycling facilities in the state. Following this, the farm, situated around 14 km from Kochi, is expected to draw both domestic and foreign tourists frequenting the city and its suburban areas.

Launching the water cycle on Saturday, Matsyafed chairman P P Chittaranjan said the fish farm - one of the popular hangout places for families - has the potential to attract more tourists.

“The fish farm and eco-tourism facility have already become popular among tourists. However, we can make this centre one of the most visited places in Kochi by providing more facilities. Like all government-backed entities, we also face certain limitations. But we have sent proposals to the government to add more facilities, including modern water sports equipment,” Chittaranjan said

The water cycle is 12-feet long, six-feet wide and four-feet high. The hull of the cycle is made of fibre and steel. The propellers are fitted on both sides, enabling easy balancing of the cycle. The seat position can be adjusted as per the height of the cyclist.  To prevent rain and blistering sun, the water cycle has a custom-built top to shield the rider from the elements.

“Even those who don’t know cycling can easily manoeuvre the water cycle. For ensuring the safety of tourists, we have lifeguards. Elders and children can enjoy the ride alike,” Nisha P, farm manager, said. Though currently, only a single water cycle is available at the farm, the Matsyafed will be introducing more such cycles soon. There is also one kayaking boat available in which two persons can be seated.

“We will make available modern equipment in the fish farm for the tourists in the next few months. We have approached the government for the necessary fund. More water cycles and kayaking boats will be introduced,” Lawrence Herald, Managing Director, Matsyafed said.

The water cycle is a joint initiative of ship mechanic and Udayamperoor native Vency Antony and Matsyafed. While the CMFRI provided the safety certificate to the water cycle naval architect M V Baiju provided technical support for the venture.
