KOCHI: Reams have been written about proper utilisation of resources like water and electricity. Most people believe the mantra towards moulding responsible citizen is catching them young. And, that's exactly what the authorities of Providence Girl's Higher Secondary School in Kozhikode are doing.
The school is implementing various energy management measures under Smart Energy Programme with the help of its Energy Management Cell.

It has been saving more than 1,000 litres of water per day. This equals the amount of water needed for three houses. The school has three water tanks with a capacity of 5,000 litres. Cell school coordinator Bindu K said the school authorities used to pump water four times a day, but it is just three times now.
Cell district coordinator Dr N Cijesh said after lunch, a student needs only 100 ml of water to wash his hand. "But, earlier, the students used five to six times that amount. As part of the project, the students were made aware of the use and misuse of water," he said.

After the awareness classes, during the noon break, the volunteers of energy club monitored the use of water every day. If any student was seen wasting water regularly, the volunteers reported it to the teachers. These students were given awareness classes again. Many students who used drinking water to wash their hands were also dissuaded from doing so.

The school also changed old taps to avoid water leakage. These efforts have helped the school to bring down the use of water. In fact, it has helped us save electricity consumption as well. The second one is the environmental impact. We expect the students to take the energy and water saving messages to their family," Cijesh said. The school has over 2,000 students.
