KALPETTA: Special operation teams of the Kerala Police have been pressed into service after suspected Maoists took two migrant labourers as hostage here on Friday.

Police officers said the labourers were workers of a private estate at Meppadi in Wayanad. It was around 6 pm that a group of four Maoists, which included three men and a woman, reached Emerald Estate, where the workers were engaged in construction work. “As per preliminary information, they asked the labourers to provide them with food.

Later, they questioned the construction work. As they left the scene, they forced three labourers to go along with them,” an intelligence officer said. The incident came to light when one of the workers escaped and reported the incident to the nearby forest office. State Police Chief Loknath Behera said the police were verifying the details.

“The Kannur range Inspector General has already spoken to the migrant labourer. We have upped surveillance,” Behera said.
