Thrikkakara municipality to decide on using government land for social activities

The District Collector gave permission to clear the plot on condition that public programmes should be conducted on the govt land only after obtaining permission from the district administration.

KOCHI: In view of the District Collector's order authorising an NGO to clear the overgrown land near the Kakkanad district panchayat office, Thrikkakara municipal chairperson M T Omana said the civic body will execute the work after consulting the municipal council.

The District Collector had allowed Thrikkakara Samskarika Kendram, an NGO to clear the 3-acre 'Poramboke' land located in between the district panchayat office and Thrikkakara bus stand last month.
The decision was taken based on a memorandum submitted by the NGO and prominent personalities to Revenue Minister E Chandrasekharan seeking permission to use the land to conduct Onam celebration, exhibitions and cultural activities.

The District Collector gave permission to clear the plot on condition that public programmes should be conducted on the government land only after obtaining permission from the district administration.
Expressing surprise over the decision to engage an NGO to clear government land, M T Omana said the municipality had approached the state government during the tenure of former municipal chairman T A Mohammed Ali seeking custody of the land to develop public amenities.

"The municipality had submitted a master plan for using the land to develop public amenities. This included a project to improve the facilities at the municipal bus stand. The municipal council will meet on June 11 and decide on clearing the land and using it for public functions," she said.
