KOCHI: One of the chief reasons why our state is termed as God’s own country is because it is blessed with the abundance of south-west monsoons! For this reason alone, the months of June, July and August become highly desirable for driving/riding enthusiasts to explore the state’s scenic routes which get accentuated by the rains. If you are one and don’t mind getting drenched in the rains, you should try out these thoroughly-enjoyable routes for a ride this monsoon!

Vazhachal - Valparai

The 70-odd kilometre from Vazhachal to Valparai, which is nestled in the Annamalai mountain ranges in Tamil Nadu, is one of the most picturesque routes with its narrow, winding roads cutting across dense forest range, waterfalls and multiple viewpoints. There are numerous points on the route where you can stop and observe wild animals in their natural habitat. So, make sure you cruise through to your destination when before it gets too dark.

Kottayam - Vagamon

The road that leads from the literary capital of the state to Vagamon, is something that tops the list of must-do road trips in Kerala. Situated 63 kilometres from Kottayam town, this road is termed as a paradise for driving enthusiasts, and rightly so with its lush green cover and sloppy curves. On a rainy day, the route becomes a little tricky to navigate, but it is well worth the effort as you get to experience the nature’s beauty at its finest.

Vythiri - Sulthan Bathery

Wayanad, the hidden gem in Kerala’s tourist ecosystem, offers one an unforgettable ride with the 35-kilometre ghat section that challenges your driving skills. Munnar - Devikulam

Termed as one of the difficult stretches to undertake in the monsoons, this 9-kilometre path leading to Devikulam from Munnar will reward one with a ride through the ghats. Thriving with green tea plantation on either side, this route helps calm down your soul. Combine it with the recurring fog and chilly weather, the experience of driving along this path will always be etched in your memory.  

Alappuzha -Changanassery

Don’t worry, it’s not just hilly routes that let one experience the joy of monsoons drives. The Alappuzha - Changanassery road lets you enjoy the beauty of mother nature amidst the lush green paddy fields. The 29-kilometre drive lets one fully understand how the monsoon rains play an important part in sustaining the food production ecosystem, as you pass through Kuttanad, which is known as the rice bowl of Kerala.
