State Begins Preparations for Santosh Trophy Football

Kerala’s Santosh Trophy preparations began with Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor inaugurating the camp at the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE), Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.

Tharoor inaugurated the camp by handing over a football to Kerala’s head coach A M Sreedharan in the presence of Kerala Football Association (KFA) president K M I Mather, former DGP Jacob Punnoose, M A Wahid MLA and KFA secretary P Anil Kumar.

Twenty-five players who were selected from the inter-district football tournament held at Wayanad have reported at the camp, while another 12 players will join the camp after the state club football championship that ends on Wednesday.

Kerala had finished second in last year’s tournament, which was held at two venues in Kollam and Kochi.

Kerala will begin their campaign in this edition’s Santosh Tophy against hosts Tamil Nadu on January 26. They will play preparatory matches against Kerala Police, KSEB, Travancore Titanium, AG’s Office and Eagles FC Kerala before leaving for Chennai on January 22.  Sreedharan will be the head coach of the side while former national junior coach Satheevan Balan will be the assistant coach.
