To revive the heyday

There was a time when writers like M T Vasudevan Nair, Vaikom Muhammad Basheer and Thoppil Bhasi played an irrefutable role in filmmaking and their works were an inspiration for many directors.  All set to bring back the heyday of Malayalam cinema, four writers of Malayalam literature join hands for the movie ‘Kadha Subhadraharanam’, a romantic tale narrated against the backdrop of a metro city.

Poet and lyricist Chandran Nair will call the shots for the film that portrays the story of a young woman who gets alienated in the city.  While the script and screenplay are penned together by author Gracy and young shortstory writer Jayamohan, the songs are written by critic M K Harikumar.

‘Kadha Subhadraharanam’ is the directorial debut of Chandran Nair who wrote the hit song ‘Manjil Melle Chayam Thoovi...’ in the film, ‘Makaramanju’.

He says,”Though Mollywood has a bunch of talented technicians, there is a dearth of fine writers. Writers are not actively involved in cinema, like the ones of yesteryears who had a clear say in the industry. Directors like Padmarajan and Bharathan were themselves talented writers.” Chandran Nair also pens two songs for the film.“The film has a young woman as the protaganist, who unknowingly shares the same apartment with a man. While she stays in the room in the night, the hero, a security guard lives there at daytime. Love blossoms between two, and the hero has to confront many hurdles in the later half,” explains the director about the storyline of the film.

“The film has a pecularity that it may be the first time that a male and female duo writes the screenplay for a film together,” says Jayamohan. Cast of the film is not yet decided. The songs of the film, sung by K J Yesudas, Hariharan and M Jayachadran are composed by lyricist Muralikrishna. The shooting of the film will kickstart next March.
