Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, the musician among kings and king among musicians, will be commemorated at a two-day dance and music festival here which will feature his compositions and 24 young singers and dancers from across the country.
The dance-music fest, titled ‘Bhavayami’, is being organised by Nadavidyalayam over the coming weekend at the ‘Naalukettu’ of the Thanjavur Ammaveedu. This building was constructed by Rama Varma at West Fort for the Bharatanatyam danseuse Thanjavur Sugandhavalli. The festival marks two significant anniversaries. 2013 marks the 200th birth anniversary year of the former Travancore ruler. Also, December 27 marks his 167th death anniversary.
From 10 am to 9 pm on Saturday, 12 young dancers will perform mohiniyattam to the compositions of the former Travancore ruler. The performers will include Kadambari Khase from Mumbai, Krishna Nayak Niddodi from Delhi and Lakshmi Raveendran who lives in France, the organisers said.
Sunday will be devoted to paying a musical tribute to Rama Varma, who is credited with more than 400 compositions. Twelve young singers will perform from 10 am to 5 pm. At 5.45 pm on the day, there will be a ‘Guruvandanam’ to honour veteran Carnatic musician Parassala B Ponnammal. It will be followed by a concert by Parassala Ponnammal. Edappally Ajith will be on the violin, Palakkad Mahesh Kumar on the mridangam and Udupi Sreedhar on ghatam. Entry is free.
