Workshop on natural afforestation Friday

A workshop on Natural Afforestation will be held at the Asian School of Business (ASB), Pallipuram, on Friday. The presentation will be made by Shubendu Sharma, founder and director of Afforest,  a Bangalore-based company which creates urban forests.  Sharma will also examine the possibility of making Miyawaki forests in ASB and Trivandrum International School.

Sharma will speak on Miyawaki method of afforestation and will share the story of making Miyawaki forests in India so far, according to a press release.

The Miyawaki  method is considered one of the world’s best afforestation methodologies developed in Japan, the release said. The method is named after Japanese plant ecologist Akira Miyawaki who established a theory  ‘’to restore and to reconstruct forests based on the concept of potential natural vegetation.”

This involves research on the local native vegetation and the subsequent determination of what the vegetation on an area would have been years before the land was converted from forest.”

Miyawaki was awarded the Blue Planet Prize in 2006, instituted by the Asahi Glass Foundation, which awards “efforts in scientific research, applications of science that contribute to solving global environmental problems.”

Sharma’s company Afforest is also based on the Miyawaki method of afforestation, which they consider to be the best in the world.

“Backed by robust management, intensive research and cutting edge lean technologies, Afforestt creates a natural forest in just 10 years. Shubhendu is one amongst 20 fellows chosen globally by INK conference in collaboration with TED,” the release said.  The presentation will be followed by an interaction with the audience and a hands-on afforestation activity followed by plantation.
