As Onam is being celebrated with all its pomp in every nook and corner of the city, children at the Sree Chitra Poor Home too celebrated the festival. As many as 262 children, along with the officials, celebrated Onam.

The spirit of the inmates soared with the arrival of Health Minister V S Sivakumar who inaugurated the celebrations. Like in previous years, this Onam too, a philanthropist, who likes to keep a low profile, sponsored new clothes to the inmates.

According to superintendent of Sree Chitra Poor Home Eliamma Varghese, the inmates were happy to celebrate Onam with their friends, instead of going home during the festival days. However, she also admitted that there were some children who desperately wanted to go home during festivals such as Onam and spent time with family members. The staff and officials of the home did their best to make the inmates happy, by cooking a delicious ‘onasadya’.

“We also organised many cultural programmes including dance, songs and various other competitions such as musical chairs, lemon and spoon to entertain inmates,” Eliamma said.  “It is true that some inmates are very nostalgic about families. But since there is a family atmosphere at the home and there are a number of inmates of the same age, it doesn’t create any problems,” she said.

The children who participated in various competitions were given prizes.
