The year 2013 was pretty forgettable for a good number of police personnel in the capital district. The punishment graph of cops soared, compared to previous years.
Around 100 policemen were suspended, both from City and Rural limits for irregularities and other issues, during the year. As many as 34 cops of the Rural police were suspended for various reasons, including getting caught for accepting bribe. Of these cops, 12 are yet to enter service till New Year’s Eve. According to police officials, those suspended include constables, head constables, ASIs and grade SIs of various rural police stations.
Among these, the latest case involved three policemen who went pilot on an official jeep for a lorry carrying illegally mined earth. Grade sub-inspector Salim, grade ASI Devapalan and civil police officer Sudheer of Narumoodu Police Station were those charged by the Rural SP.
Besides these 34 policemen who were suspended from service, some senior officers were also punished for various reasons. “However, the exact figure is available only with the IG, who is the authority to issue suspension orders,” said the officials at the SP office. In other words, the total number of policemen and officers suspended would be much more than the above-mentioned figure.
The City Police are also not far behind as records show that as many as 30 cops were suspended in 2013. The latest one to be suspended was grade SI Vijayakumar on December 24. These 30 policemen included CPOs, Grade ASIs, SIs and even SIs of various police stations in the city limits.
Several cases registered against them had led to the suspension of cops under the city limits. In one of the cases two policemen were placed under suspension in connection with the alleged lapses in handling a case relating to the attack on a family, including women. Crime sub-inspector Arjun and constable Rasool were those suspended.
In another incident, three police personnel, including a grade SI, attached to the Museum police station were suspended from service in connection with the attack on a mediaperson. Grade SI Iniyathil Ali Khan and civil police officers Anandakuttan and Sreekumar were suspended by the then Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr A Srinivas.
The Poonthura grade sub-inspector Vijayadas, who brutally attacked a CPM activist at Anayara, was also suspended by the DGP following a directive of the Home Minister.
Besides these policemen, the office of Inspector General (IG) of Police, Thiruvananthapuram Range suspended former Circle Inspector, Medical College, T Nazerudeen.
